We made our way through the space exhibition and entered the Wellcome Wing knowingly searching out a plant display. Near the stairs we find a large refrigerator display, inside a container is filled with liquid and therein a vase with sunflowers. The work Eternal Spring II shows dead sunflowers that have been immortalized through immersion into frozen liquid silicon. The image seems slightly distorted from last time we went – when they seem fresher, now the petals where thinner and almost seemed aged. Eternal Spring II exposes the artificiality and labour intensiveness of attempting to simulate nature. Genetic modification, cryogenics - how far are we prepared go to prolong life?
